3K Education Center

This new 9,100 SF school, situated between the Laurelton and St. Albans neighborhoods of Queens, is one of many new locations across the five boroughs aimed at giving the youngest children of NYC an early jumpstart to learning and navigating educational environments—while supporting New Yorkers in managing the complexities of family life.

Comprised of four large classrooms and associated administrative, service, and kitchen areas, the school is located in a former commercial space. The co-location of adjacent operating medical facilities posed several challenges to the design team in adapting an existing building to the City’s stringent school construction standards —while creating a warm, welcoming space that can meet the special needs of young children just beginning to learn and socialize within a classroom setting.

JLGA designed a completely new fit-out of the space featuring new room layouts and mechanical and communications services. Special consideration was given to crafting spaces that can support specific learning approaches for 3- to 4-year-olds and encourage free-play and interaction.

JLGA designed a new street-side entrance gate that leads through a landscaped yard to the main entrance—enabling children to avoid traversing a parking lot on their way to school.

Once inside, an efficient double-loaded corridor easily connects the entry and reception with classrooms and administrative spaces.

A brightly colored outdoor play yard to the rear of the building provides exercise space for the children.
