Flatbush Avenue 3-K Center

JLGA designed a 15,330 sq. ft. 3-K Education Center for the NYC School Construction Authority, transforming a historic 1930s-era building on Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn. The center accommodates 105 students across seven classrooms, plus an exercise room, administrative offices, and support spaces.

Originally divided into eight storefronts, the building’s stepped floors and irregular structural grid presented unique challenges. A 1980s renovation by a national pharmacy chain had merged the storefronts into a single retail unit, further complicating the design process.

JLGA’s solution involved rebuilding the ground floor slab to overcome these structural constraints, ensuring spacious, column-free classrooms within the building’s original framework. This inventive approach successfully navigated tight timelines and pandemic-related supply chain challenges, delivering a functional, modern educational environment.
