The façade’s expansive transparency frames sweeping views, fostering a sense of openness that connects the building to its environment. Bold and sculptural, the design plays with broad planes and asymmetric angles to create a striking presence. The athletic center honors Poly Prep’s storied 100-year history, while embodying the school’s commitment to innovation and forward-thinking excellence. With facilities that reflect the caliber of Poly Prep’s athletic programs, the center stands as a testament to both tradition and progress. The comprehensive program includes a reconfigurable full-court gym, an 11,000 sq. ft. wrestling area, a 12,500 sq. ft. squash center featuring six international courts, including two all-glass competition courts, along with concessions, locker rooms, staff offices, and a spectator mezzanine. The Novogratz Center’s design maximizes transparency through strategically placed glass, creating a dynamic focal point at the heart of campus life. This contemporary architectural statement not only invites participation and engagement with its athletics but also harmoniously connects the building to the existing gymnasium and the broader campus context, marking a bold, new chapter in Poly Prep’s legacy. The now ADA-accessible, sustainably designed, and energy-efficient building serves as a public welcome station, concession stand, and park storage. JLGA’s design strategy focused on two core challenges: salvage and transform an outdated, irregularly shaped existing structure into a more integrated, sustainable, and welcoming presence—and create a recognizable and accessible principal entrance that unifies and readily identifies this recreational greenspace to the community. The sloped green roof, a focal point of an array of sustainable design strategies implemented, employs an extensive vegetation system that supports and sustains all-seasons growth. The vegetation helps manage storm water, mitigate air pollution, provide wildlife habitat, foster biodiversity, and reduce urban heat island effects. Our design strategy leveraged the structure’s atypical footprint to express an artful, unique form for this public building that features an asymmetrical green roof. Designed as an independent structure able to support its plant loads, the 2,000 sq. ft. roof tips upward like a bird’s wing, creating a strong aesthetic gesture visible to surrounding area, emphasizing the site’s natural landscape, and visually connecting to the green field and park. The center includes dedicated areas for cardio and weight training, along with fitness studios for yoga, dance, and spinning. Additional renovations feature a conference room, locker facilities, and a reconfiguration of the security, reception, and entry areas, alongside upgraded mechanical systems. To address the space’s tight dimensions and low ceiling heights, JLGA employed strategic mirrors and a light color palette, visually expanding the interior and enhancing its openness. The redesign also revitalizes the building’s exterior with expansive glass elements that punctuate the previously solid brick façade. This not only floods the interior with natural light but also highlights the center’s activity, attracting attention from passersby. Located on the site of the former Steeplechase Amusement Park and next to the iconic Parachute Jump tower, this stadium serves as the home for a Minor League Single-A baseball team affiliated with the New York Mets. Completed in time for the 2001 season, the stadium includes seating for 6,500, luxury suites, food services, retail concessions, and more, transforming the site into a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment venue. JLGA’s design bridges Surf Avenue and the Riegelmann Boardwalk, offering a contemporary facility that honors Coney Island’s cultural heritage while opening doors to future commercial development. The stadium is equipped for baseball games, concerts, and various events, with features such as 12 luxury suites, locker rooms, press boxes, and ample parking for 1,240 vehicles. Maimonides Park excels in balancing modern amenities with respect for its surroundings. It preserves neighborhood harmony by maintaining public access to the beach, boardwalk, and Steeplechase Pier, and strengthens the connection to the historic Parachute Jump. This thoughtfully designed venue not only elevates the community but also attracts private investment, reinvigorating the waterfront just minutes from millions of people. JLGA led the conceptual design of the stadium and its 55-acre site, including the innovative, operable domed roof and a roll-out natural turf field, allowing the venue to adapt to various functions like concerts. JLGA’s work included designing the moving components of the stadium, such as the roof and playing field, and determining optimal seating configurations and sightlines for arena events. Additionally, JLGA conducted a feasibility study for the development of the Shea Stadium site, focusing on parking, road improvements, and necessary approvals. Sustainability was a core aspect, with advanced wastewater management, extensive plantings (including 700 new trees), and environmentally conscious construction practices like recycling demolition materials and using low-sulfur diesel fuel. JLGA also collaborated with the Metropolitan Transit Authority to enhance subway access and designed a subtle security perimeter, balancing safety with the fan experience. Approval from multiple city agencies, including the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, NYCEDC, and the NYPD, was integral to the project’s success. This 8.4-acre, multi-use complex repurposes four historic airplane hangars into a 150,000 sq. ft. indoor sports facility, featuring two regulation-size hockey rinks, a versatile gymnasium, gymnastics center, fitness area, and indoor climbing wall. Outside, 200,000 sq. ft. of synthetic turf fields accommodate soccer, football, and lacrosse, designed to NCAA standards. The site also includes landscaping, parking, and stadium seating. The fields were built atop the existing tarmac, preserving the site’s historical integrity and minimizing demolition. The design seamlessly blends the hangars’ historic forms with modern amenities, creating a unique sports venue that celebrates Floyd Bennett Field’s history while meeting the needs of today’s athletes. Originally built in the 1980s, the stadium now boasts modern amenities, including shaded picnic terraces, bermed seating with concessions, and expanded locker rooms. A new suite level with private suites and open-air party terraces elevates the fan experience. Among the standout features is a cutting-edge wet training suite, equipped with Hydroworx aquatic therapy and fitness pools, designed to enhance athlete rehabilitation and training. The renovation was completed within a fast-tracked six-month timeline. The overhaul also includes a reimagined exterior, new entrance plaza, and a sustainable stormwater management system that integrates the surrounding wetlands. These improvements, along with a full rehabilitation area, reinforce the stadium as a premier training and recovery hub for the Mets.
