The renovation converted existing administrative and library space in the hospital to create two new IR procedure rooms, with planning for a future third procedure room included in the project scope. The pre/post procedure area was designed to suit the new radial lounge recovery model, with a combination of patient bays and a modernized recovery area, where patients can walk around while being monitored via telemetry by a centralized staff observation area. The 7,100 SF suite also includes all FGI required program elements, including a public waiting room, ADA toilets, and various clinical and staff support spaces. The design team worked closely with the practitioners and equipment vendor to accommodate all architectural and systems requirements for the new catheterization equipment being installed in the procedure rooms. The new Cardiac Cath suite nearly doubles the hospital’s capacity for catheterization procedures in service of ensuring access to care for all patients in the Sunset Park neighborhood and beyond. This transformative project emerged from a broader master plan developed by JLGA to support the client's mission of delivering world-class medical education to a diverse, dynamic student body. By consolidating previously scattered and outdated anatomy teaching facilities - some of which required cadaver transport through public corridors - the new center places learning, functionality, and dignity at the forefront of the educational experience. This versatile facility features a 44-seat lecture hall, a 1,500 SF cadaveric dissection lab, and a viewing window enhanced with advanced A/V systems, allowing surgeons-in-training to observe live surgical demonstrations. Designed for adaptability, the center serves as a seminar room, distance learning space, or teleconference hub. Additional amenities include a 1,800 SF research core, lobby with reception, lounge, pantry, morgue, and a Cryo-EM Microscopy Suite. The design thoughtfully addresses the challenge of limited natural light, incorporating bright lighting and a warm color palette in public areas, while research spaces feature cool tones and metallic finishes. Overcoming the constraints of low ceilings and structural limitations, JLGA removed obstructive walls and columns to create open, flexible spaces. After replacing storm-damaged mechanical systems, the team implemented flood mitigation strategies to future-proof the center against potential flooding. The design featured a reconfigurable wet lab, strategically placed along the windowed periphery to maximize natural light, along with upgraded spaces including microscopy rooms, a live zebra fish lab, and tissue culture facilities. The renovation optimized layout for collaboration by positioning administrative and computational spaces adjacent to labs, while adding open work areas and a new conference room to expand the non-lab workspace. Aesthetic and functional upgrades included new ceilings, lighting, and flooring throughout. Sustainability was prioritized with energy-efficient solutions, such as enhanced window insulation, LED lighting with occupancy sensors, and an upgraded mechanical system to improve airflow and energy performance. Administrative offices, support spaces, restrooms, and staff locker rooms are seamlessly integrated, ensuring a well-rounded and efficient environment for both patients and staff.
