This versatile facility features a 44-seat lecture hall, a 1,500 sq. ft. cadaveric dissection lab, and a viewing window enhanced with advanced A/V systems, allowing surgeons-in-training to observe live surgical demonstrations. Designed for adaptability, the center serves as a seminar room, distance learning space, or teleconference hub. Additional amenities include a 1,800 sq. ft. research core, lobby with reception, lounge, pantry, morgue, and a Cryo-EM Microscopy Suite. The design thoughtfully addresses the challenge of limited natural light, incorporating bright lighting and a warm color palette in public areas, while research spaces feature cool tones and metallic finishes. Overcoming the constraints of low ceilings and structural limitations, JLGA removed obstructive walls and columns to create open, flexible spaces. After replacing storm-damaged mechanical systems, the team implemented flood mitigation strategies to future-proof the center against potential flooding. Cyclotron and Radiochemistry Laboratory for its Department of Radiology. Spanning three floors, the facility incorporates a new mechanical shaft and a rooftop penthouse to enhance infrastructure. The design presented numerous challenges, including the integration of departments, flood mitigation, and coordination with existing medical equipment. Extensive collaboration with regulatory agencies such as DOT, ConEd, DOH, DEC, FDNY, and DOB ensured smooth approvals. This sophisticated facility will complement the hospital's newly installed MRI-PET scanner, facilitating innovative clinical treatments. Beyond its clinical functions, the particle accelerator produces radio-pharmaceutical isotopes, supporting research needs and positioning the hospital to meet the evolving demands of both clinical care and scientific discovery. The redesign encompassed key areas including the lobby, elevators, stairs, restrooms, conference room, emergency command center, and corridors. At the heart of the transformation, JLGA leveled two existing lobbies on the ground and lower levels, creating an elegant annex that seamlessly links the newly expanded, ADA-compliant lobby to the hospital's inpatient and outpatient facilities. This thoughtful intervention enhances the flow of the space and elevates the patient experience. To further establish a bold, contemporary presence, branded signage was introduced along with a canopied, illuminated entrance, enhancing visibility and offering a sense of security and modernity. The layout incorporates a connecting corridor that preserves the existing finishes, ensuring continuity with neighboring departments. Office spaces are designed with cool tones and modern finishes, creating a cohesive and professional atmosphere. JLGA’s design approach maximizes the existing infrastructure, with minimal modifications to structural elements and services. The new program efficiently utilizes the space, placing laboratory areas on one side of the corridor and administrative offices on the other, ensuring a streamlined flow while maintaining optimal functionality. The design featured a reconfigurable wet lab, strategically placed along the windowed periphery to maximize natural light, along with upgraded spaces including microscopy rooms, a live zebra fish lab, and tissue culture facilities. The renovation optimized layout for collaboration by positioning administrative and computational spaces adjacent to labs, while adding open work areas and a new conference room to expand the non-lab workspace. Aesthetic and functional upgrades included new ceilings, lighting, and flooring throughout. Sustainability was prioritized with energy-efficient solutions, such as enhanced window insulation, LED lighting with occupancy sensors, and an upgraded mechanical system to improve airflow and energy performance. Animal Imaging Suite. This cutting-edge facility supports a range of imaging equipment, including an 11T Small Animal MRI, MicroPET, IVIS Spectrum, and animal surgery and housing spaces. JLGA faced two significant challenges: first, supporting the weight of the MRI machine required the installation of new steel supports within the building's tight ceiling space. Second, to accommodate the MRI’s large magnet, part of the building's façade was removed to allow a crane to lift the magnet into place. Additional steel shims and a copper Faraday cage were incorporated to address magnetic and RF-shielding concerns. The suite’s Wet Lab is designed with flexible, movable lab benches and worktables to meet future needs. The facility also includes offices, imaging analysis stations, and individual researcher workstations. To maximize natural light, JLGA created a central circulation spine, placing imaging rooms in the building’s interior and opening laboratory spaces to the exterior. This layout fosters collaboration by providing a shared core workspace for the hospital's researchers. JLGA faced the challenge of blending practical design with aesthetic appeal, ensuring the space felt fresh, professional, and welcoming. Respecting the existing structure—specifically the original tiled elevator lobby and water fountains—required a creative approach, balancing modern elements with the existing finishes.
